Frequently Asked Questions

Does Beta Sigma Psi Haze?
No. While fraternities have a reputation for hazing and abusing their Associate Members, both IFC and Beta Sigma Psi outlaw it. We hold to our ideals and teachings, and focus on building the bond between members and Associate Members. Our national Constitution and By-Laws also outlaw any such activities against our members.

Do Fraternities party all the time?
We rarely have parties during the week; however, there are various social activities that take place on the weekends. During the week we have our daily study hours, at which time the house has to be quiet. On the weekends it is the individual's choice as to how involved he gets socially.

Is Beta Sigma Psi a Lutheran preacher's club?
Beta Sigma Psi only has one required church attendance towards the beginning of each semester. Outside of that, you are not forced to go to church, but we encourage it. There are sign-up sheets to be woken up for church on the weekends, and to be reminded about bible study on Thursday nights if you wish to sign up for them. We do not do anything that forces our beliefs on anyone else on campus.

How much will it cost?
Our basic room and board fee is currently $520.00 per month (including food costs, which are an extra purchase if you live in campus housing), which is considerably less than the Residential College and dorms. With four board bills per semester, each semester's base cost is $2,080. There are other optional things to buy, such as snack food, shirts for various events, tickets to seminars and informational sessions, benefit dinners, and much more. These things all get added on to the individual's board bill at the end of the month. If you are looking for financial assistance, there is a scholarship given out each year to an incoming Beta Sigma Psi freshman. You can download it from the left navigation panel.

All fraternities do is drink, right?
While some members of our fraternity drink, not everyone does. Drinking is never forced on a member or by a member of Beta Sigma Psi. For those that wish to drink, Beta Sigma Psi offers a sober driver system that is in effect every weekend. This way, no one has to even consider driving home under the influence of alcohol.

Aren't all fraternities like Animal House?
Don't believe everything you see in the movies. The Greek system does a lot of positive things: philanthropies, community service, provides leadership skills, and builds life-long friendships. Greek students at Missouri S&T often get higher grades than people living in the Residential Colleges or dorms, due mostly to our study system. Greeks have a higher graduation rate, and being Greek helps you to become a well-rounded person, which is what employers often look for when considering you for a career position.
